CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Elias rising out of bed woke Maria. With half-sleepy eyes, she looked at the clock, “Where are you going it’s only three o’clock in the morning?”

“Shhh, just go back to sleep. I’m going to bury the diamonds in the garden,” he whispered.

He tiptoed down the stairs and opened the back door. When one of the hinges squeaked, he froze. Elias went into the kitchen and found a small bottle of olive oil, and returned to the door. Pouring small amounts on his finger, he rubbed it into all the hinges. He swung the door back and forth to test it for squeaks. With the job done, Elias returned the oil to the kitchen and went out the door.

Now to find a safe spot to bury the diamonds, where the gardener won’t accidently dig them up.

Elias walked around the yard multiple times, thumbing the gems in the leather bag, scanning each flower bed and bush for the right nook to hide them.

Where, where can I put them?

Eureka! In the center of the yard, his eyes landed on the on meter high white marble birdbath.

I’ll bury them under here. There are no plants or flowers planted around it for the gardener to dig there. Oh shit, I forgot to get a knife to open the ground. Let me see if I can dig with my hands.

He pulled at the sod that edged against the birdbath, and it came up. Elias dug the soft soil, and after a few minutes he dug a hole large enough to bury the diamonds. He placed the bag into the cavity, covered it with dirt and grass.

Satisfied with his work, he washed the soil off his hands in the birdbath and went off to bed.

Maria woke first, and sat in the bedroom chair waiting for Elias to wake up. She had to wait an hour.

“Where did you bury the gems?” She kept her voice low.

Elias didn’t answer. He bolted up from the bed and looked out the window, down into the garden. “Come here and I’ll tell you.”

She went to his side, and he whispered in her ear, “See the birdbath in the middle of the yard?”

“Yes.”

“Look at the grass in front of it. Do you see anything unusual?”

“No.”

“Good. Then I did a good job. That is where I buried them. Now let’s get some breakfast.”

After they had finished eating, the gardener showed up for his weekly visit. Upon seeing the nurseryman tending to the garden, Elias hurried and sat on a chair on the veranda. With a suspicious eye, he watched the yardman’s every move until he dozed off.

He woke with a start. Not seeing the gardener in the yard, his eyes cut towards the base of the birdbath.

His breath bursting, in and out, he ran to the spot. Sweating, and in short jerky movements he scanned the yard to see if anyone could see him.

Satisfied, he fell to his knees and dug his hand into the dirt. Not until his hand felt the sack and the bulge of diamonds did his breathing return to normal.
